Mount Athos

The Athos peninsula or Agion Oros is a unique place in Greece, dedicated to prayer, worship of God and monastic living. Since 1988 belongs to the Unesco World Heritage Sites List. It is governed as an autonomous region within the Greek Republic and can be visited only by men. If you want to arrange a visit in Mount Athos you should first consult the “Mount Athos office for pilgrims” in Thessaloniki and take the “diamonitirion” (the visit permit). In Mount Athos there are 20 monasteries of exceptional beauty, history and spiritual wealth.
