Potidaia was founded in the 6th century B.C. by the Corinthians. The Battle of Potidea in 432 B.C. was one of the one of the catalysts for the Peloponnesian War. In this Battle fought, amongst others, the great philosopher Socrates and the famous Athenian politician and general Alcibiades. In 316 B.C. Kassandros founds at the same region Kassandreia, a new city that soon flourished. During the Roman Empire era there was an important roman colony here, whereas during the Byzantine years the fortified wall was build by Joustinianus to protect the region. Ruins of that wall are still visible today. Potidea played an important role during the Greek War of Independence in 1821 as it was here that the residents of the whole peninsula were gathered to defend Kassandra.
